Botox
The number one cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, Botox is a cosmetic prescription medication used by dentists and physicians to improve moderate to severe wrinkles and frown lines. It was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002. Botox is injected in to the muscles between the eyebrows or around the eyes and forehead to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and frown lines. Results can be seen about 1 week after treatment. The effect of Botox injections usually lasts 3-4 and up to 6-8 months depending on the individual. Over 4.6 million Botox cosmetic procedures have been performed in the Unites States since 2007.

Side effects are usually temporary and minor. They can include bruising, drooping eyelid, double vision, or uneven smile. This usually will resolve itself within days. Side effects are uncommon because cosmetic botulinum contains a very low dose of toxicity.
Juvederm
Juvederm is an injectable gel that is used to fill in facial wrinkles and the folds from the nose to mouth and marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin). These lines are common and become more pronounced as we age. Dr. Weintraub uses Juvederm to plump lips, fill in facial scars and “smile lines.” Juvederm is mostly hyaluronic acid, naturally found in the skin, muscles, and tendons. It was approved by the FDA in 2006 for cosmetic procedures. The results usually last 6-9 months, then the material is absorbed by the body. Older faces obtain a more youthful appearance because hyaluronic acid binds with collagen in the skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
The side effects can be temporary redness, tenderness, bruising or swelling. Juvederm should not be used by severely allergic patients.
Why have a dentist perform this procedure? Dr. Weintraub administers intraoral injections for the comfort of his dental patients routinely. He is able to provide this service to his Juvederm patients as well, making this procedure virtually pain free. Physicians do not use this technique.
