The Symptoms and Dangers of Gum Disease

A “simple cleaning” may save your life.

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that may result in a serious infection leading to loss of bone and teeth if left untreated.

What you may not know is that gum disease is associated with heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, respiratory disease, premature or underweight babies and cancer.

Symptoms of Gum Disease
Periodontal Disease

  • Red swollen gums
  • Sensitivity
  • Bleeding while brushing
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth pain
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums

The association between heart disease and gum disease lies in the body’s reaction to fight off infection and inflammation. Appearing in The American Journal of Cardiology and The Journal of Periodontology, this link has become clear. Both dentists and cardiologists should examine the mouth for suspected gum disease, especially before cardiac procedures.

Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to have a premature or low birth weight baby. Visit Dr. Weintraub every three months when pregnant.

Diabetics are more likely to develop periodontal disease which can lead to higher blood sugar and increased diabetic complications

What can be done?

Prevention-Prevention-Prevention

Regular check-ups and cleanings are essential for good general health. Often, Dr. Weintraub is the first to see a patient at risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, premature, low birth weight babies, coronary artery disease or cancer.

How can Dr. Weintraub treat gum disease?

First Dr. Weintraub must make a diagnosis after a detailed oral examination. A thorough cleaning, done by the hygienist is the next step. At this point, it will be determined if further treatment is needed.

Non-Surgical Treatment

This is the least invasive and most cost effective manner to treat periodontal disease. After the teeth are thoroughly cleaned, removing all plaque and debris, an anti-microbial medication is placed at the sites of the infection. The patient is instructed to follow up office procedures with proper home care techniques. Follow up visits are imperative to maintain good oral health. The patient is usually instructed to visit Dr.Weintraub every three months to maintain good general health.
