Tooth Extraction
Are you experiencing severe tooth pain? Have you been told you need a tooth extraction? At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, Dr. Joshua Bagley provides gentle, efficient tooth extraction that prioritizes your comfort and well-being.
When Saving a Tooth Isn't Possible
Saving natural teeth is always our priority. However, there are situations where extraction is the best option for your overall health:
- Severe damage from trauma or decay
- Loose teeth due to advanced gum disease
- Wisdom teeth that are painful or cause crowding
- Relieve overcrowding to prepare for orthodontic treatment
- Prepare for dental implant placement
Before recommending extraction, Dr. Bagley conducts a thorough examination using digital x-rays and imaging to evaluate your specific needs carefully.
Our Approach to Pain-Free Extractions
At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, our patients' needs come first. We prioritize comfort during extraction using advanced digital imaging technology to plan your procedure and ensure the most efficient procedure possible. Potent local anesthetics numb the area so you don't feel pain during the procedure. If you are anxious, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation to help you relax.
Throughout your procedure, Dr. Bagley and our caring team will check in with you regularly to ensure you're comfortable. Our soothing amenities include blankets and pillows, noise-canceling headphones, and TVs with Netflix to create a more soothing environment.
Essential Post-Extraction Care
Following your procedure, our team will provide detailed after-care instructions that promote fast healing and help prevent painful complications like dry socket. Dr. Bagley and our team are always available to address any concerns or questions that arise.
Restoring Your Complete Smile
Having a plan in place for tooth replacement can help you focus on your future smile and make extraction seem less daunting. When you're ready, we offer several options tailored to your needs, including:
- Dental bridges
- Full or partial dentures
- Dental implants
- Implant-retained dentures

Frequently Asked Questions
Proper care after a tooth extraction at our Morris Plains practice is crucial for comfortable healing. Dr. Bagley will provide detailed instructions, but here are the essential guidelines to follow:
Post-Extraction Recovery Guidelines
The First 24 Hours
For the first day after your extraction, focus on protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket:
- Bite gently on the gauze pad placed by Dr. Bagley for about 30–45 minutes after the procedure
- Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or using a straw, as these actions can dislodge the clot
- Limit physical activity and rest with your head elevated
- Apply ice packs to your face in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Take prescribed or recommended pain medication before the numbness wears off
Days 2–7: Promoting Healing
After the initial 24 hours:
- Gently rinse with warm salt water (a half teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) several times daily
- Continue taking medications as directed by Dr. Bagley
- Eat soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes, gradually returning to your normal diet as comfort allows
- Brush and floss normally, but avoid the extraction site
Warning Signs to Watch for Post-Extraction
Contact our Morris Plains office immediately at (973) 644-0088 if you experience:
- Severe pain that isn't controlled by medication after 2–3 days
- Excessive bleeding that doesn't subside
- Swelling that worsens after 2–3 days
- Signs of infection, such as fever or pus
- A condition called "dry socket" is characterized by intense pain and a foul taste or odor
