Bone Grafting

Bone Grafting in Morris Plains, NJ

Building jawbone strength to support dental implants.

Losing a tooth can trigger a slow, invisible process of bone loss in your jaw that makes replacing it with an implant more complicated with every month you wait. Many patients don’t realize that the site of a missing tooth needs a certain amount of healthy, dense bone to support an implant, and that this bone naturally shrinks and reshapes itself once a tooth is gone.

At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, Dr. Joshua Bagley and his team specialize in preparatory bone grafting procedures that make dental implant placement possible for patients who might otherwise be told they don’t have enough bone to move forward. Whether you need socket preservation right after an extraction, ridge augmentation to rebuild width and height, or a sinus lift to create space in the upper jaw, we design a grafting plan around your specific anatomy and your implant timeline.

Socket Preservation After Extraction

As soon as a tooth is removed, the bone that once supported it begins to resorb, and studies show the socket can lose a significant percentage of its width within the first few months. This is why we often recommend socket preservation immediately following an extraction, especially when an implant is part of the long-term plan. The procedure involves placing a bone graft material directly into the empty socket and covering it with a protective membrane, which holds the space and encourages new bone to form in a stable, predictable shape.

We frequently pair socket preservation with tooth extractions so patients never have to coordinate two separate procedures with two separate providers. Doing both in the same visit also means the graft goes in while the socket is freshest, which tends to produce the best healing environment. For patients who know an implant is somewhere in their future, even if it is a year or two away, this single step can save a great deal of complexity later.

Ridge Augmentation for Width and Height

Sometimes the jawbone has already resorbed to the point where the ridge itself is too narrow or too short to anchor an implant securely. In these cases, we perform ridge augmentation, a procedure that rebuilds the missing width or height using grafting material shaped and layered to restore the ridge’s natural contour. This is common in patients who lost a tooth years ago and are only now ready to pursue an implant, since bone loss compounds over time when a socket has been left untreated.

Ridge augmentation is typically staged before implant placement, giving the graft several months to integrate with the existing bone and mature into a stable foundation. We walk every patient through what that timeline looks like using imaging specific to their jaw, so there are no surprises about how long the process will take. This procedure often becomes the deciding factor in whether a patient can move forward with a fixed restoration rather than a removable one, which is part of why we treat it as such a central step in comprehensive implant planning.

Sinus Lifts for the Upper Jaw

The upper back jaw presents a unique challenge because the maxillary sinus sits just above the roots of the upper molars, and that space often doesn’t leave enough bone to support an implant on its own. A sinus lift addresses this by gently raising the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material underneath it, creating the vertical height an implant needs.

A 2023 evidence-based review of sinus floor augmentation techniques found that grafting the maxillary sinus floor is a well-supported method for restoring adequate bone volume in patients who would otherwise be poor candidates for upper posterior implants.

We evaluate every patient’s sinus anatomy with detailed imaging before recommending this procedure, since the exact technique depends on how much natural bone height remains. Some patients need a more conservative approach, while others benefit from a more involved lift performed at the same time as implant placement. Dr. Bagley reviews these options in detail during your consultation, so you understand exactly why a particular technique is being recommended for your case.

Why Patients Choose Us for Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a precise procedure, and the outcome of your future implant depends heavily on how well that graft is planned and executed. Dr. Bagley earned his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, where he was inducted into the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society, and he completed additional general practice residency training at New York Medical College. That combination of prosthodontic-focused education and hands-on residency experience shapes how he approaches every graft, always with the final implant restoration in mind rather than treating the graft as an isolated step.

We also make a point of walking patients through the reasoning behind their specific recommendation, whether that means combining a graft with a crown or bridge restoration down the line or coordinating grafting with a broader implant plan. Patients tell us they appreciate having a provider who explains the “why” behind each step rather than just scheduling the next appointment. This transparency is something we intentionally build into every consultation.
