Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Morris Plains, NJ

Surgical treatment for conditions affecting the mouth, jaw, and face.

Oral surgery has a reputation for being complicated, mostly because patients assume it means leaving their regular dentist behind. In reality, many of these procedures can be handled by the same provider who already knows your mouth and its history.

At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, Dr. Joshua Bagley provides a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgical services directly in his Route 10 practice, from routine tooth extractions to the surgical groundwork that makes dental implants possible. Patients throughout Morris Plains, Parsippany, Denville, Randolph, and Morristown can address surgical needs and restorative follow-up care in one familiar office rather than being shuffled between providers.

Common Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Procedures

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the umbrella term for procedures that treat the hard and soft tissues of the mouth, jaw, and face. Because these procedures often overlap with restorative and implant dentistry, having the same dentist manage them creates continuity that a one-time surgical referral cannot. Dr. Bagley evaluates each case individually, using digital imaging to plan procedures with precision before any instrument touches the tooth or bone.

Tooth Extractions

Extractions are one of the most common reasons patients need oral surgery, whether the cause is severe decay, a fracture below the gumline, overcrowding, or a wisdom tooth that never fully erupted. Dr. Bagley performs both simple and surgical extractions, always aiming to preserve as much surrounding bone and tissue as possible so future restorative options, including implants, remain on the table.

Bone Grafting

When a tooth has been missing for some time, or when an extraction leaves insufficient bone density, a graft rebuilds the foundation needed to support a future implant. Bone grafting often determines whether a patient qualifies for same-day or delayed implant placement, and Dr. Bagley clearly walks patients through that timeline before any procedure begins.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the cornerstone of our restorative offerings, and the surgical placement itself falls squarely under oral and maxillofacial care. A titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, where it fuses over time to create a stable base for a crown, bridge, or denture. We evaluate bone quality, gum health, and bite alignment before recommending dental implants, implant-supported dentures, or a broader treatment plan.

Oral Pathology

Not every mouth issue is related to a tooth. Oral pathology covers screening, identifying, and managing unusual lesions, sores, or tissue changes in the mouth and jaw, some of which can signal more serious underlying conditions. Routine oral cancer screenings are part of every comprehensive exam at Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, and we address any suspicious finding immediately rather than leaving it for a future visit.

Early identification matters considerably here. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers are diagnosed in tens of thousands of Americans annually, and outcomes improve substantially when abnormalities are caught before symptoms progress.

Why Patients Choose Morris Plains Center for Dentistry

Dr. Bagley’s approach to oral surgery is shaped by hands-on, continuing education rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. He pursued advanced implant training beyond dental school and applies it to plan each surgical case around your long-term restorative goals, not just the immediate problem in front of him.

Patients often come in with a good amount of anxiety about a surgical procedure, and we built our office to ease that worry from the first visit. A few things stand out about how surgical care is handled here, including:

  • Comfort: Nitrous oxide sedation is available for patients who need it during a procedure.
  • Transparency: Every consultation includes a clear walkthrough of what a procedure involves, what recovery looks like, and what it costs.
  • Continuity: The same dentist who performs your surgery also manages your restorative follow-up, so nothing gets lost between providers.
  • Flexibility: Major dental insurance carriers, including Delta Dental PPO, Guardian, Horizon BCBS, Cigna, and Aetna, are accepted, along with an in-house membership plan and financing options for larger cases.

Learn more about Dr. Bagley’s background and approach to care, and know that these same principles guide every surgical procedure he performs, whether it’s a routine extraction or a more involved implant case.

Your Recovery After Oral Surgery

Recovery looks different depending on the procedure, but patients consistently want to know the same things: how much discomfort to expect, how long healing will take, and when normal habits like eating and brushing can resume. Dr. Bagley walks through these details before any procedure begins, so there are no surprises after the appointment.

Most patients can manage recovery with over-the-counter pain relief and a few days of easing back into regular routines. However, more involved procedures like bone grafting or implant placement may call for a slightly longer adjustment period. Clear aftercare instructions, along with a direct line to the office if anything feels off, help patients heal with confidence rather than guesswork.
