Emergency Dentistry
Prompt help for tooth pain, broken teeth, and dental injuries.
A cracked tooth at dinner or a sharp jolt of pain that won’t let up can turn an ordinary day upside down in seconds. When a dental emergency strikes, you need clear answers fast, not a long wait for a callback or a guessing game about whether your situation warrants urgent care.
At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, we treat dental emergencies with the urgency they deserve. Dr. Joshua Bagley and our team see patients dealing with everything from a nagging toothache to a fully knocked-out tooth, and we know that acting quickly often makes the difference between saving a tooth and losing it. Alongside our general dentistry care, we treat the most common dental emergencies below, so you know what to expect when you reach out to our team in Morris Plains.
Sudden, persistent tooth pain is one of the most common reasons patients call us for an emergency appointment. This kind of pain often points to a deeper issue such as an infection, a cracked tooth, or decay that has reached the nerve, and it tends to get worse rather than better without treatment.
We recommend rinsing with warm salt water and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever while you wait to be seen, but these steps only temporarily manage discomfort. Once you are in our office, we will identify the source of the pain and recommend the right next step, which may include a filling, root canal treatment, or another restorative option depending on what we find.
According to a 2025 federal data brief from the National Center for Health Statistics, tooth disorders account for nearly two million emergency department visits per year in the United States. Many of these visits can be avoided or treated more comfortably with prompt dental care rather than a trip to the emergency room.
Few dental emergencies feel as alarming as a completely knocked-out tooth, but quick action gives you the best chance of saving it. Time matters here more than almost any other dental emergency, so we ask patients to call us the moment this happens rather than waiting to see if the pain subsides.
If possible, pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse off any visible dirt without scrubbing it. If you can, place the tooth back into the socket comfortably, or keep it moist in a container of milk or between your cheek and gum until you reach our office. Reaching a dentist within 30 minutes to an hour gives the tooth the best odds of successful replantation, and our team will work to see you as quickly as possible.
A tooth pushed partially out of its socket, sometimes called an extruded or dislodged tooth, is a serious injury that needs prompt attention, even though the tooth has not fully separated from the gum. This type of injury commonly happens during sports collisions, falls, or accidents involving direct impact to the mouth.
Avoid touching or wiggling the tooth, and try to bite down gently to keep it stable while you get to our office. We will assess the tooth’s position and the surrounding bone, and treatment may involve repositioning and stabilizing the tooth to give it the best chance of healing in place. Left untreated, a dislodged tooth can lead to nerve damage or eventual tooth loss, which is why we always recommend same-day evaluation for this kind of injury.
A chipped or cracked tooth can happen from biting down on something hard, a fall, or an unexpected blow to the face, and the severity can range from a minor cosmetic chip to a deep crack that exposes the nerve. Even a small chip is worth having examined, since a crack that seems minor on the surface can extend further into the tooth than it appears.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and, if you can locate the broken piece, bring it with you to your appointment. Depending on the extent of the damage, we may recommend bonding, a dental crown, or a composite filling to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance. Waiting to address a cracked tooth can let bacteria reach the inner pulp, increasing the risk of infection and more involved treatment down the road.
Soft tissue injuries to the gums, lips, or tongue often happen alongside other dental trauma, such as a fall or a sports injury, and they can bleed heavily even when the cut itself is not especially deep. These injuries can look frightening, but most respond well to prompt cleaning and, when needed, a few stitches.
Apply gentle, steady pressure with a clean piece of gauze or cloth to help control the bleeding, and use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth to reduce swelling. If bleeding does not slow down after 10 to 15 minutes of direct pressure, this may indicate a more severe soft tissue injury that needs immediate evaluation. Our team will thoroughly clean the area and check for damage to nearby teeth before recommending next steps.
Falls, sports injuries, and car accidents can all lead to broader dental trauma that affects more than one tooth or extends beyond the teeth themselves. A traumatic dental injury may involve a combination of fractures, dislodged teeth, and soft tissue damage all at once, which makes a thorough exam especially important.
We take a full look at your teeth, gums, and jaw to catch injuries that aren’t immediately obvious, since some trauma doesn’t show visible damage right away. Depending on what we find, treatment may range from monitoring the tooth over the next few weeks to more involved procedures, such as extraction if a tooth cannot be saved. Our team will walk you through every option so you understand what is happening and why, before any treatment begins.
