Single-Tooth Dental Implant in Morris Plains, NJ
Natural-looking replacement for a missing tooth.
A single missing tooth can change how you chew, put extra strain on neighboring teeth, and start a slow chain reaction of bone loss in your jaw if left untreated for too long. Whether you lost a tooth to an injury, decay, or an infection that couldn’t be saved, the good news is that replacing just one tooth is one of the most predictable and well-established procedures in modern dentistry.
At Morris Plains Center for Dentistry, Dr. Joshua Bagley focuses on rebuilding what’s missing in a way that looks and functions like a natural tooth, without touching the healthy teeth around it. A single-tooth implant is different from full-arch solutions like All-on-X or implant-supported dentures, which replace an entire row of teeth. This dental implant option is built for one job: replacing one tooth, in one spot, permanently.
A single-tooth implant is not one piece of hardware. It is a three-part system that works together to recreate the entire structure of a natural tooth, from the root beneath the gumline to the visible surface you bite with. The three parts of a single-tooth implant include:
A small titanium cylinder that Dr. Bagley places directly into the jawbone where the tooth root used to be. Titanium is used because it fuses naturally with living bone through a process called osseointegration, which is what gives an implant its exceptional stability.
A small connector piece that attaches to the top of the implant post once it has healed and fused with the bone. The abutment is what the visible crown eventually attaches to, and it is typically placed during a short follow-up appointment.
A custom-made cap designed to match the color, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth so the finished result blends in seamlessly.
Together, these three parts recreate a tooth that looks natural and functions the way a healthy tooth should, from the root to the biting surface.
Because a single-tooth implant depends on the jawbone fusing securely around the titanium post, healing time is the most important variable in the entire process. Most patients can expect the osseointegration phase, the period when bone grows around and locks onto the implant post, to take anywhere from three to six months depending on bone density and overall health.
During this healing window, Dr. Bagley may provide a temporary restoration so you never have a visible gap. Once imaging confirms the implant has fully integrated with the bone, the abutment is attached, and the final crown is placed shortly after. Patients who need a tooth extraction before implant placement may require additional healing time between the extraction and the implant surgery, particularly if bone grafting is needed to rebuild a thin or weakened ridge. While the full timeline can feel long, it is what allows the implant to become a permanent, load-bearing part of your bite rather than a temporary fix.
Single-tooth implants are an investment, and the total cost depends on several factors that are specific to each patient’s situation. The condition of the jawbone at the implant site plays a major role, since a patient who needs bone grafting or a tooth extraction beforehand will have additional steps built into their treatment plan. The type of crown material selected, as well as whether any additional diagnostic imaging is required, can also affect the final price.
Dr. Bagley believes in walking patients through the full financial picture before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises along the way. Morris Plains Center for Dentistry accepts major PPO insurance carriers, and an in-house membership plan is available for patients without dental insurance. Flexible financing is also available for patients who want to spread the cost of treatment over time, making a single-tooth implant more accessible regardless of your financial starting point.
Compared to a traditional bridge, which requires reshaping the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap, a single-tooth implant stands entirely on its own. Nothing about your existing teeth needs to change to support it, which is one of the main reasons implants have become the preferred long-term solution for a single missing tooth. Bridges also tend to wear down or loosen over the years, especially in patients with an active bite, while implants are designed to function as a permanent replacement.
Long-term data backs this up. A large-scale retrospective study analyzing more than 158,000 dental implants placed over an eight-year period found an overall implant failure rate of just 2.21 percent, with most complications occurring early in the healing process rather than after the implant has fully integrated. For patients weighing a dental crown or bridge against a single-tooth implant, that kind of long-term reliability is often the deciding factor.
Losing a single tooth doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of compromises. With a properly placed implant post, abutment, and crown, Dr. Bagley can restore a missing tooth in a way that looks natural, feels stable, and protects your jawbone for years to come. His training at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, along with his commitment to walking patients through every stage of treatment, means you will always understand exactly what is happening and why.
